This one-day open course is great for beginners and will give you the basic knowledge you need to head out safely in to the hills and mountains of the UK.
This course is perfect for anyone with little or no prior navigation experience. If you are a hill walker who wants to be able to head out and be more confident if the weather worsens to get off the hills this course is for you.

Key symbols, i.e. how to find a footpath, fence, stream, etc., and how to interpret them
Introduction to different map scales
Setting the map
Interpreting contours
Planning and following a route using paths and other key features
Compass basics
This one-day advance Navigation Course is suitable for anyone who has completed one of our Beginners Navigation Courses, or who can already competently use a map and has the relevant skills.
How to plan and follow a route across featureless terrain
Estimating distances accurately using pacing and timing
Navigating in poor or limited visibility
How to use the compass
Re-orientating yourself if you do get lost
Mountain weather – how the weather affects our route planning and choice during the day
Emergency procedures in case of an incident
Choice and use of equipment
The content of this course can be tailored to you and be a day or just an evening to suit you, but aimed at people who know the basic’s of navigation and want to improve. The cost of this course is TBC once we agree the requirement.
Night Navigation – how to find your way in darkness across the mountains
Navigation at pace for events, such as Mountain Marathons
Navigation in a particular area
A qualified Mountain Leader (or higher award)
